Lyndonville, VT: Beryle Helen Rivers Houghton, age 95, of Red Village Road, passed peacefully with her beloved family beside her at home, early Thursday morning, December 18, 2025.
Beryle was born in East St. Johnsbury, VT on August 21, 1930, daughter to the late Clyde W. and Gladys (Garfield) Rivers. She grew up in Concord where she attended school and graduated from Concord High School in the Class of 1949. Beryle married Edwin “Mickey” Houghton on October 31, 1950, and shared nearly 55 years together at the time of his passing on May 26, 2005. For the first few years of marriage, Beryle and Edwin made their home in East St. Johnsbury. She worked at the Post Office and store there for some time. Beryle also worked at Maple Grove Farms of VT packaging candy and as a tour guide. Then, for many years, she worked as a cook at the Pine Knoll Nursing Home.
While living in East St. Johnsbury, Beryle belonged to the East St. J Congregational Church and later attended the Lyndon Congregational Church. Over the past ten years she has been a member of the Lyndon Center Baptist Church.
Beryle was a member of the Concord and the Lyndon Historical Society, the former being very important to her. On Heritage and Craft Days, you would find Beryle and Mickey working at the Fairbanks Museum at the "What's It?" booth. She was a member of the Grange for many years, as well as the Vermont Home Extension.
Beryle enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, sewing, making Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls, quilting with Mickey, and most especially raising her family. She loved having a vegetable garden for the family. And then continued with a smaller garden with great yield. She also enjoyed working in her many flower gardens. Beryle was famous for her fried donuts, and she sometimes used them as payment for this or that. She always had fresh donuts available and time to talk for her large loving family and all of her many, many visiting friends.
Beryle is survived by 2 of her children: Paul C. Houghton and companion, Rochelle, of Concord, VT, Kathleen R. Simpson and her husband, Lawrence, of Lyndon, VT; 7 grandchildren: Jennifer, April, Holly, Kathleena, Joseph, Tonya, and Todd; 13 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Beryle was predeceased by: her son, Dana S.S. Houghton; her daughter, Beth H. Degreenia; her brother, Carlisle Rivers; her sister, Winona Bedor; and nephew, Roger Bedor.
