Carlos Bean

Carlos Bean of East Burke, Vermont, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday evening, October 17, 2025, at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton, VT.

He was born on March 13, 1933, in Coventry, the son of Harry and Katherine Card Bean.

Carlos attended the White School in East Burke and then Lyndon Institute, graduating in 1951. Shortly after graduating, he joined the USAF, where he served his country as a Control Tower Operator in Korea, Texas, Albania, and Georgia. After completing four years of active duty, he was discharged with the rank of Staff Sargent. He then accepted a job with the CAA/FAA, and after graduating from the Academy in Oklahoma City, he accepted a position as an Air Traffic Control Specialist at the Air Route Traffic Control Center in Leesburg, VA. Upon completing 33 years of Air Traffic Control, as a Controller, Team Supervisor, and Manager, he retired in 1984; he then worked for UPS until returning to the family homestead in East Burke.

In 1962, he married Betty Utterback of Alexandria, Virginia.

Carlos enjoyed the outdoors and spent many hours camping with the family, covering the East Coast from Nova Scotia to Florida. Up until a few years ago, summers were spent camping at Island Pond and fishing the nearby lakes and ponds. He also enjoyed working on the local snowmobile trails, building bridges, clearing and grooming the trails. He took great pride in caring for his lawns and gardens, also spending time in the woods cutting logs and the winter supply of wood for heating.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Betty Bean of East Burke, and son Michael of Virginia.

Carlos was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Katherine Card Bean, sons Gary and Jeffery, his brother Leonard of Lyndonville, sister Gloria Stowell of West Burke, and brother Darwin of Barnet.

Burial will take place at Woodmont Cemetery in East Burke at the convenience of the family.
