Chinka Whitekiller

Chinka Whitekiller, 80, of St. Johnsbury, passed away peacefully at his home on August 13, 2025 after a long illness.

Chinka was born on September 19, 1944 to Carl and Virginia (Knight) Fred in Ukiah, CA. He was raised in California before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 16. He served two tours in Vietnam before being discharged from military service. Afterwards, he began working in carnivals across the country before settling in Vermont in 1982 where he worked primarily as an umpire for local baseball and softball leagues for over 30 years.

Chinka was a man of many talents. He worked on high steel in Manhattan with the Mohawks, played semi-pro baseball for the Padres before they joined the MLB, and was a rodeo rider. He loved baseball and football, cheering for his favorite childhood teams: The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco 49ers. He enjoyed watching westerns and had a great love for his dogs that he had throughout his life. He was a proud member of the Pomo Tribe and cherished his heritage. Most of all, he was a proud father that enjoyed teaching his children sports and games of all kinds.

Chinka is survived by his sons Shalo Buck, Mathantha Buck, and Chad Buck; grandchildren Kyle, Shonda, Messiah, Sarah, and Eden; his ex-wife and lifelong friend Kathryn Buck; longtime caregiver Rhonda Rose; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, sons Brendan Buck & Terrell Buck, and his sister Marceline.

A celebration of Chinka’s life will be held at a later date. Anyone wishing to contribute toward funeral expenses can use this link.
