Danny Paul Scott, 76, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026, surrounded by his children.

Danny was born in St. Johnsbury on May 13, 1949. He was the second of four children born to Leslie and Madelyn (Brough) Scott and was raised on School Street in St. Johnsbury. After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he served for four years. He spoke fondly of his time in the service, often sharing stories and memories from his time in Thailand and Mississippi.

After his time in the service, Danny returned to Vermont to be close to his family and plant his roots. He built a cabin in Barnet for his young family—a place that became the foundation for so many years of special memories. He started on a surveying crew before eventually joining the Town of St. Johnsbury, where he made his career as Public Works Director. He loved his job, his employees, and his coworkers.

A father, grandfather, brother, friend, and an unforgettable member of the community, Danny, fondly known as “Grampa,” had a heart of pure gold. He loved easily and had a remarkable ability to support the people he loved simply by listening, never rushing anyone in his presence. He was loyal, funny, charming, kind, gentle, stubborn, and devastatingly handsome. His blonde curls, which later turned a striking bright white, made him stand out in any crowd. He was truly one of a kind.

He found his sense of place in the Northeast Kingdom, especially on Stannard Mountain, where you could find him almost daily. There, he cultivated and cherished many traditions at camp with his brothers, son, son-in-law, nephews, and dear friends. It was where he found comfort and true contentment.

Danny loved to ski at Burke Mountain. He was arguably the most beautiful skier there ever was. He often reminisced about skiing all day as a boy with his older brother, sandwiches tucked into their pockets so they could ski straight through the day. Later in life, he found immense joy in watching his grandchildren learn to ski, sharing that same love with them.

He adored his four grandchildren and was incredibly proud of each one. He never missed an opportunity to talk about them.

Danny had a special connection to animals, especially his dogs and horses. Riding his Morgan mare, Dinah, in a cowboy hat and leather duster coat was a sight to behold. He was the ultimate cowboy—effortless, genuine, and always true to himself.

His other great passion was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle with his brother David—they had many adventures he deeply cherished.

Danny was a hero to many and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his daughter Emily; son Tim; son-in-law Tyler; daughter-in-law Alex; grandchildren Soren, Silas, Charlotte, and Gus; sister Christine; brother Jeffrey; sister-in-law Tari, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
