Dwayne Leon Garfield, 85, of Lyndonville, VT, passed at his home 4/24/25 after declining health.
Dwayne was born 5/8/39 to Leon and Ruth (Reed) Garfield. He attended school at the Burke Hollow one room school and graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1957.
He was in the National Guard from 1957 to 1964.
In his younger days he enjoyed dancing and candle pin bowling and raising hell with the Burke boys. He loved hunting, fishing, shooting, attending to his many floral gardens, feeding wild birds, reading about history for surrounding towns and many wars, and spending time with his family during cookouts, reunions, and riding the back roads looking for wildlife. He participated in many shooting events at The Forrest and Stream Club in St. Johnsbury and abroad. He was president of The Forrest and Stream Club for many years where he also helped raise brook trout to stock local waterways. He also enjoyed genealogy and knew a lot about local family history. He was the go to person for history for the towns of Burke, Sutton, and Lyndon and has many old photos which he has shared with many historians.
He met Norma at the Miss Lyndonville Diner and they married 4/9/61. They had four children: Vickie, Doug, Leon, and Will. They shared 59 ½ years together before her passing in December 2020.
He worked at the Hardware Store and Concord Woodworking in Lyndonville and for his father-in-law Densmore Gorham farming before primarily becoming a machinist (with a couple of side jobs) from 1966 until he retired in 2010. He worked at Tap & Die, Old Fox, Northeast Tool, Ercil Davis, Vermont American, and NSA.
He is survived by his children: Vickie of Lyndonville; Doug (Jody) of Sutton; and Will (Amy) of Burke. Brother Reed (Donna) and blood brother Ed Wheelock both of Lyndonville. Grand/Great Grandchildren: Jess Cassidy – Joey and Aubree; Amanda Garfield (Steve) – Jazlyn and Madison; Caleb Cassidy (Michaela) – Ayla and Rayne of Concord; Jake (Lindsey) of Lyndonville; Brandon (Chrissy) – Avery of Lyndonville, and Chad Billings of Burke. Sister-in-laws Ruth Houghton of Kirby and Sandra Berry of Lyndonville. Many nieces and nephews
He is predeceased by his parents Leon and Ruth; in-laws Densmore and Iva Gorham; wife Norma, and son Leon.
A celebration of life will be held on 6/21/25 from 12-3 at the Lyndon Outing Club and food will be provided. Following the celebration the burial of Dwayne and Norma will be held at the Howland Cemetery in Burke Hollow at 3:30.
