Florence B. Meigs

Florence B. Meigs, 95, of Town Forest Road in Passumpsic, VT passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at her caregiver’s home in Lyndonville, VT.

 Florence was born in Plainfield, VT on April 10, 1928, to Raymond and Violet (Batchelder) Buxton.  She grew up in Lower Cabot, Upper Cabot, and Passumpsic, attending 5 different schools until the 5^th grade! At the age of 11 the family moved from Passumpsic to “the farm” in St. Johnsbury.  She graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1946 and was married that August to Richard Meigs.  During high school, Florence worked at Hovey’s every afternoon to make her room and board. Following high school, she worked at the St. J House and then at New England Telephone for 27 years.  Florence also worked at Ames Dept. Store and drove cars for L&T Auto to the auctions sites and was a paraeducator for Miller’s Run School. 

 Florence was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Passumpsic Community Baptist Church and was part of the Bell Ringers at Grace United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed attending her grandchildrens’ events, traveling, winters in Florida with her sister, and family reunions.  She liked Home Dem meetings, being a 4-H Leader, enjoyed sewing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, swimming, biking, and card making. 

 Survivors include her 3 daughters: Ruth York and husband, Norman “Buzzy”, of Lyndonville, Carol Labounty and husband, Dwayne, of Monroe, NH, and Nancy Young of Wheelock, VT; 3 sisters: Jeanette Angers of Perkinsville, VT, Linda Bergeron and husband, Victor, of Trinity, FL, and Sally Buxton of Springfield, VT; 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

 She was predeceased by her parents and husband, her son Ray “Tim” Meigs; sisters: Patricia Gifford and husband Robert, Raelene Emerson; Charlene Devereaux; brothers: Merrill “Bud” Buxton, Fred Buxton and wife Millie, and Dean Buxton; and a special sister-in-law: Gertrude McKay and husband Wallace.

 A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024, 1 PM at Passumpsic Community Baptist Church, RT5 in Barnet, VT.  Visitation will be Thursday, February 1, 2024, 5-7 PM at Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer Street in St. Johnsbury, VT.  Burial is in the spring on May 16, 2024, 10AM at Passumpsic Cemetery in Waterford, VT.
