James Marshall Frase-White

St. Johnsbury, VT: James Marshall Frase-White, age 78, of Railroad Street, passed at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, Monday, March 2, 2026.

James was born on April 20, 1947, son to the late Frederick August and Maude Lorraine (Gottwalls) Frase. He grew up in Goldsboro and the Eastern Shores of Maryland graduating from the North Caroline High School in Ridgely, MD with the Class of 1965, attended college at Boston State College and Asbury College. Jim received his Masters’ in Psychology from Duquesne University. He lived in Baltimore working as a commercial artist and moved to Boston as a store designer with Paine Furniture doing editorial and commercial artwork. He met Clarence Hill in 1978 and for 12 years owned and operated Fowles Restaurant in Newburyport, MA. Following this he taught reading at Union Sanborn and Southwick Elementary in Northfield, NH, for 12 years. They moved to St. Johnsbury in 2012 where Jim became involved as a volunteer with the NEK Artisans Guild where he read, painted and write. He found everything interesting.

He is survived by his husband, Clarence Hill, of St. Johnsbury, his daughter: Jessica Doughty of Minerva, OH, 3 sisters: Judith Wright of Denton, MD, Ruth Thawley of Churchill, MD and Alma Dean of Onancock, VA, 3 grandchildren: Shawn Doughty, Sierra Doughty and Jon Geeslig. He was pre-deceased by his Adoptive father: Joseph F. White and his brother: John Frase.

Friends may call on the family from 5-7PM on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at the Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer Street in St. Johnsbury, VT.

Interment will take place at the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph, VT at 1PM Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

Memorial Donations may be made in James’ name to the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, 1171 Main Street, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819
