Jean Olcott

June 30, 1930 — October 7, 2018

Jean Evelyn Olcott, age 88, of New Boston Road, passed away October 7, 2018 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, following a short period of declining health.

Jean was born June 30, 1930, in Whitefield, NH, the second of ten children, to Raymond and Althea (Stillings) Holmes. She grew up all over northern New Hampshire, as the family moved frequently.

On September 23, 1946, Jean married Glenn Howard Olcott in St Johnsbury. Shortly after, they purchased the farm on Severance Hill Road from Glenn's parents. Together, they worked hard for many years, keeping the farm going, and raising their family. She was always proud of this, and quick to tell others, "We're farmers!"

Jean was full of life, constantly busy and on the go. And she loved a good party! Whether it was at the farm, or their winter home in Florida, she always made sure everyone had plenty to drink and eat (she was an amazing cook!), and there are few who haven't been dragged out to dance a polka, two-step, or waltz with her!

Jean was always straight-forward and honest, stubborn and principled. She loved to be in charge, had to have the last word, and she was a fighter right up until the end. She was the foundation of our family.

Jean is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Glenn, Sr., her sons:  Glenn Olcott, Jr. and Evelyn, and Gary Olcott, Sr. and Veronica, her grandchildren:  Wendy Olcott (Russell Nolan), Greg Olcott (Marnie), Penny Bessom (Rick), and Gary Olcott, Jr. (Holly), her great-grandchildren:  Brianna Bessom, Garrett, Adelina, Dario and Derek Olcott, and Jessica Phegley. Also her siblings:  Sherman Holmes (Jackie), Jennie Sanderson, Lyman Holmes (Joyce), Carole Lyman, and Jed Holmes, a sister-in-law:  Roberta Holmes, and many extended family members.

Jean was predeceased by her granddaughter, Michelle Olcott, her great-granddaughter, Gillian Bessom, and her siblings, Raylene Lamere, Helen Blodgett, Eleanor Holmes, and Perley Holmes.

Jean hated a big fuss to be made over her, so private graveside services will take place on October 20 at Grove Cemetery in East St Johnsbury.
