Jennifer Ethel Fleming passed away peacefully on October 17, 2026, at the age of 81.
Born on December 6, 1944, in New Hampshire to the late John A. Jones and Ethel (Stuart) Lunnie, Jennifer was raised in Concord, Vermont, and graduated from Concord High School with the Class of 1964.
In April 1967, Jennifer married the love of her life, Robert Wilson Fleming of Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. Together, they built their home and raised their family in Lyndonville, Vermont, creating a life filled with deep community roots and lasting friendships. They loved camping in the summer on weekends with their close friends, the Stimpsons and Downers from Lyndonville.
For many years, Jennifer was a familiar and welcoming presence at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital (NVRH). She held multiple positions, working as a receptionist and transcriber in the X-Ray department and later as an account specialist in admissions. When not at NVRH, she enjoyed working at private medical practices from St. Johnsbury to Barre.
Following Robert's passing in July 2008, Jennifer relocated to Virginia to be near her son and his family. She became a tremendous help, joining forces with Great Aunt Suzie to assist with school pickups and drop-offs while Matthew was on active duty in the U.S. Navy and Carrie's pediatric therapy business rapidly grew. She loved supporting and watching her grandchildren grow and compete in a variety of sports like swimming, lacrosse, field hockey, basketball, and softball. Jennifer also assumed duties as the billing manager of Carrie's practice—a role she cherished and thrived in for almost six years.
She eventually returned home to retire in Vermont in 2015, reconnecting with old friends and being near her beloved siblings, nephews, and nieces. She always welcomed a helping hand from folks such as Richard, Ricky, and Cathy Hanks. She found a home and settled on Red Village Road, where neighbors and friends like Brian and Kim Nichols and the Berry family frequently checked in on her while she gardened and took walks with her dog, Sammy. She loved autumn in Vermont and she loved Kirby Mountain. She also enjoyed kayaking with family members like Andie and Holly, alongside her dog Sammy. She was extremely lucky to have a sister like Jackie so close in proximity and friendship to step in and step up when needed.
In 2023, following the passing of her daughter Karen, Jennifer moved back to Virginia to spend her remaining years surrounded by the love and care of her family. She was deeply grateful for the love and support of Eric and Deb Bach at the Canterbury Inn in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, as well as the staff at Poets Walk in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and the Woodmont Center in Stafford, Virginia.
Jennifer is survived by her loving son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Carrie Fleming of Stafford, Virginia; her five grandsons, Justin Clouarte (son of Karen), Erik Fleming, Patrick (Madelyn Dingler) Fleming, Mitchell (Lauren Harrison) Fleming, and Nicklaus Fleming; and her two granddaughters, Allyson Fleming and Elizabeth Fleming. She is also survived by her brothers, John (Phyllis) Jones of North Concord and Harold (Dennise) Lunnie of Concord; her sisters, Judy (Max) Wheelock of Woodbury, Jackie Leigh of Lyndonville, and Rachel (Stanley) Storey of Calais; her brothers-in-law, Bryant (Lyn) Fleming of Waterford and James (Sue) Neil of Cornish, New Hampshire; and her sisters-in-law, Andrea Neil and Murial Clark; as well as many extended family members and dear friends from New England to Virginia.
Jennifer was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert Wilson Fleming; her daughter, Karen Ethel Fleming; her parents, John and Ethel; her brother, Ronald Jones; her sisters, Joyce Walsh and Wanda Poor; and her brothers-in-law, David Neil, Walter Neil, Bernard Neil, Robert Clark, and Jerry Leigh.
