Mabel Whitcomb

Sheffield, VT: Mabel Shirley Whitcomb, age 97, died at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton, VT, Sunday, July 19, 2026.

Mabel was born on June 3, 1929, in Sheffield, VT, daughter to the late Oscar and Dora Belle (Simpson) Miles. She was raised and educated in Sheffield and lived there most all of her life. Mabel married Vernon Chester Whitcomb, Jr. and shared over 55 years together at the time of his death in 2003. She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, shopping, hanging out with her sisters and going out to eat. Mabel was also very active in the Sheffield Federated Church throughout her life.

She is survived by her 4 children: Doug Whitcomb (Lisa Thompson) of Lyndonville, Bruce Whitcomb (Patsy) of Newark, Janice Hopkins (Peter) of Lyndonville, Brian Whitcomb (Lynn) of Sheffield, 6 grandchildren: Todd Whitcomb, Adam Whitcomb (Jessica), Amber Macek (Dan), Aimee Hopkins, Maeghan Whitcomb, Samantha Whitcomb and 8 great-grandchildren.

Mabel was also predeceased by her 4 siblings: Dorothy Randall, Doris Whitcomb, Margaret Berry and Raymond Miles.

A private graveside service will take place at the Wm. Dexter Cemetery in Sheffield at the convenience of the family. There will be no Calling Hours.
