Mark C. Greenan of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Jack Byrne Palliative and Hospice Care Center in Lebanon, NH, surrounded by his loving family — his wife, Amy, and their children, Patrick and Emma. His passing came on what would have been his father Hugh Greenan’s 95th birthday.
Born and raised in St. Johnsbury, he grew up deeply rooted in family, faith, and community. He was the son of Hugh J. Greenan and Mary (Connelly) Greenan, both of whom preceded him in death. The values instilled in him by his parents — devotion to family, quiet strength, and integrity — guided him throughout his life. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1989 and from Vermont Technical College in 1992, beginning what would become a long and meaningful career in the electric utility field.
Much of his professional life was spent with Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS), later Green Mountain Power, where he worked first as a lineman and later as a Power System Operator. He took great pride in his work and approached it with unwavering commitment. He answered countless storm calls, often in the harshest conditions, picked up extra shifts without hesitation, and traveled out of state to assist with power restoration following major natural disasters. Known for his deep knowledge of the electrical system, he could recall pole numbers from memory and explain to anyone exactly how electricity reached their home. The people he worked alongside were more than coworkers — they were family — and he was widely respected for his skill, reliability, and dedication.
Faith was also an important part of his life. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, Sheridan Council 421, and a Fourth Degree member, reflecting his commitment to faith, service, and fellowship.
Above all else, family came first. He was fiercely proud of his children and almost never missed a single game or school event. Whether it was Patrick on the baseball diamond or football field, Emma on the softball field or soccer field, or either of them on the basketball court, he was there. As Patrick attended St. Lawrence University and Emma continues her studies at Colby-Sawyer College, Mark and Amy logged countless miles together, traveling to support their children, cheering them on, and simply being present. Showing up for their kids wasn’t something they made time for — it was who they were.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was best known for his unwavering love of the Boston Red Sox. His encyclopedic knowledge of sports — teams, players, statistics, and history — made him a favorite companion for any game-day conversation. Whether watching a game, debating a call, or reliving a classic Red Sox moment, sports were a constant source of joy and connection.
Throughout his long and courageous battle with an aggressive form of lymphoma, he faced each day with remarkable strength and grace, supported always by the love of his family.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Amy; his children Patrick (Abby) and Emma; his brothers Kevin (Roberta) Greenan, Paul (Joan) Greenan, and John (Deb) Greenan; his father-in-law Richard (Denise) Barrett; his brothers-in-law Mike (Jenn) Barrett and Garth (Kat) Leach; along with nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Mary Greenan, and by his beloved mother-in-law, Janette C. Barrett, whom he lovingly referred to as “Ginny.”
