Obituary: Nancy E. Rovero (nee’ Scranton)

May 30, 1935 – April 6, 2024

Nancy Ellen Rovero passed away at 88 years, on April 62024, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, with her family by her side.

She is lovingly remembered by her son: Stephen Cheney and wife, Judy, of VT, son the late Scott Cheney of VT, son: Todd Cheney of VT, daughter: Ellen Friedler and husband, Don, of NY, grandchildren: Krista, Jamie, Mandy, Matthew, Madeline, great grandchildren: Weston and Taylor, brother: the late Sirreno Scranton of VT, sister: Sally Cheney of CT, and late husbands: Rev. R. Nelson Cheney of VT, and James T. Rovero of CT.

Nancy was a minister’s wife for many  years and was active in the church since a young age.  She had dreams of becoming a missionary. She later married James T. Rovero. Nancy was a wonderfully intelligent woman whose curiosity fostered a love of learning throughout her lifetime. Nancy’s creativity shone in her poetry, writing, art, cooking and gardening and made any space or event pleasing and special. She spent a lifetime caring for people, animals, friends, and family, was a gifted geriatric and hospice nurse that always took the time to help others feel seen, special, and loved.

Animals and their welfare were very special passions of hers.  At Pope Memorial Animal Society of Orleans, Vt., she fostered hard to thrive kittens and volunteered at the spay/neuter clinics.   Nancy volunteered animal therapy in hospitals, nursing homes, and prisons with her beloved Newfoundland dogs. She co-founded the Cross Roads Kennel Club that taught animal care and dedication education to school groups. The club ran fun dog matches and raised money for different animal causes.

Nancy loved the North East Kingdom of Vt. and her little home among the hills. Her fingers cracked and ached from lovingly working her flower gardens and making stone steps, patios, and walls. She couldn’t abide gardening gloves! She loved her childhood in rural Hebron, CT, and was proud to be a New England Yankee that attended a one room schoolhouse. She loved nature, her family, and friends and will be missed greatly and forever.

A celebration of life will be held at the West Burke Senior Site, 212 School Street, West Burke, Vt. 05871 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm on June 22nd. Light refreshments will be served.
