Philip J. Sorrell

            Concord, VT: Philip J. Sorrell, age 85, lifelong resident of Concord, passed peacefully with his family beside him at Northeast Vermont Regional Hospital on Friday, January 19, 2024.  

            Philip was born in Fairfield, VT, on December 13, 1938, son to the late Willis and Cecilia (Teague) Sorrell.  Raised and educated in Concord, at the age of about 15 or 16, he started working for Freeman Austin, who was a true mentor, learning many of the skills and trades he would use throughout his life. On August 16, 1958, he married Jean Theresa Fournier and raised a family in his hometown.   Philip was a great outdoorsman whether it was logging, even as a hobby, or hunting, he just loved being in the woods.   He sugared season after season with his close friends, Barney and Bill and took many deer over the years, avidly teaching his sons how to hunt as well.  He worked construction for Bridges, Inc for 21 years until he was elected as Road Commissioner to the town of Concord.   Phil had always been civically minded, serving as School Director and as Selectman.  He even kept the town clock wound for over 2 decades, taking the 62 steps every week to the top. Philip loved keeping the lawns mowed and his garden in order and was already planning for it this spring. 

            Philip is survived by his beloved wife, Jean, of Concord, his 4 children: Elaine Bixby of Lyndonville, Stephen Sorrell and wife, Teresa, of Underhill, Michael Sorrell and wife, Turie, of Willison, FL, Jeffrey Sorrell of Ft. Morgan, CO, 6 siblings: Louise McKearney, Rose Patryshak, Nancy Valimont (Cliff), Joann Mogelnicki (Frank), Ruby Gorham (Rick) William Sorrell (Patricia), 10 grandchildren: Monica, Stephanie, Jordan, Nicole, Crystal, Sean, Jesse, Jodi, Matthew, Ashley and 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

            He was predeceased most recently by his son-in-law: David Bixby, 6 siblings: Jane Cowdell, Betty Noble, Charlotte Farrow, Veronica Fournier, Roger Sorrell, Walter Sorrell and his in-laws: Mildred and Charles Fournier.         

             A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Winter Street in St. Johnsbury.   Burial will take place in the spring at Mt. Calvary Cemetery and will be announced. 

            Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to either Good Shepherd Catholic School, 121 Maple Street, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.  or to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital, Memorial Processing, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959
