Richard Warren Brown, age 79, of Sheldon Brook Road passed away unexpectantly on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St Johnsbury, VT.
Richard was born in Portland, Maine on February 11, 1946, son of the late Warren Brown and Theo (Carver) Brown. As a child he moved to Island Pond, VT where he grew up loving fishing and hunting adventures with his grandfather. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1964 where he played in the band and was a member of the basketball team that won the division state championship tournament.
He fell in love with his high school sweetheart, Anne Morrissette and they married in 1965. The couple moved to Fitchburg, MA, bought a small house and started a family. Dick, as he liked to be called, had many professions in his life, including insurance broker, bus driver, meat cutter, business owner and hamburger flipper to name a few. In 1973 the family moved to Colebrook, NH where they owned and operated The Country Market. They returned to Lyndonville in 1978 where he began a career he especially enjoyed as a sales representative for Morris Alper and Sons. During his 20-year career he won many regional, state and national contests. He retired from full time work in 2015 but got bored and worked part time at Lyndonville Hardware.
Dick was a quiet, generous and gentle man who loved the outdoors, his 1955 Chevy, classic country music, all animals, the beach, collecting guns and most of all, hanging out with his family. He was notorious for driving slowly and his wife gave him the nickname of “Rocket Richard” (this is a hockey reference) Honest to a fault he would drive 20 miles to return a quarter but he was also very vigilant about his money and would wait in line at Walmart for 20 minutes to recoup the 20 cents they had overcharged.
In the past few years Dick and Anne enjoyed spending several months of winter at Golden Ponds in Fort Pierce, FL, returning in the spring to attend kids’ baseball and softball games. They enjoyed traveling to other parts of the US and to Paris, Germany, Prague and England.
Although he was quiet and quite reserved, he would occasionally surprise everyone by showing up in a Santa costume, a flower girl outfit or as Wyatt Earp. He made hundreds of pairs of earrings for his children, grandchildren and friends. In years past he was a member of the bow shooting club at Rick’s gun shop and the gun shooting club, The Dalton Gang.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Anne; his daughters Christine Boemig (Joe) and Jen Brown Jarry (Rob); six grandchildren: Gabriel Kelly (Kayla), Elizabeth Sanderson Hayden (Corey) Mollie Bessette (Anthony), Emily Sanderson, Hillary Kelly (Jason) and Lane Sanderson (Erica Beer). He is also survived by 13 great grandchildren, his sister Beverly Brown (Russ), several nieces and nephews and sisters and brothers in law. He will be missed by his family, friends and his little dog Miso.
There will be an informal celebration of life (A LIFE WELL LIVED) held at the Kirby Town Hall on Saturday, November 2, 2025, from 1-3 pm. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Lyndon Dog Shelter or any animal rescue group. Forever in our hearts.
