Richard E. Somers

Richard Elmer Somers, age 82, of St. Johnsbury, VT passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Canterbury Inn in St. Johnsbury. He was born on April 13, 1943, to Richard F. and Irene (Lakie) Somers of Barnet, VT.

Richard (Dick) attended West Barnet Elementary School. He graduated from Peacham Academy in 1961. He obtained his associate degree in electrical technology from Vermont Technical College in 1963.

After graduation, he worked at Thermal Dynamics in West Lebanon, NH. Later he worked for Central Vermont Public Utility eventually becoming a meter specialist working on Industrial 3-phase meter work. Over time he taught himself welding skills, woodworking skills and whatever skills he needed to do the job at hand. He created many pieces of equipment and devices designed to make what he was working on easier to do, both for CV and for himself. He liked to do things easier and more efficiently. He was also talented at using what he had in creative ways.

After he retired, he worked at managing his woodlot in St. Johnsbury. He trained to sharpen saw blades and had a sideline of sharpening saw blades for others. As part of his wood lot management, he cut firewood to order for his customers. He was also skilled at investments.

He was predeceased by his parents. He leaves behind his siblings, Elizabeth M. Somers of Odessa, TX and Steven Somers (Rachel Norway) of St. Johnsbury; cousin Stuart Lackie (Janet) of Swanton, VT and numerous cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer Street, St. Johnsbury VT at 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 26, 2025. He will be buried at Barnet Center Cemetery.
