Roy Carroll Vance

Danville, VT: Roy Carroll Vance, age 82, of Webster Hill Road, passed on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, following a lengthy struggle with health.

Roy was born in St. Johnsbury, VT, on April 15, 1943, son to the late Laine C. and Eleanor Marie (Fahy) Vance. Raised and educated in Danville, he lived there all his life, graduating from Danville High School in the Class of 1962 and went on to Barbering school in Boston. He started cutting hair for Burt Noble in Danville for the next 2-3 years and married his high school sweetheart, Linda Joyce Langmaid on November 9, 1963. The opportunity for a barber’s chair opened in St. Johnsbury on Central Street working for Chet Bailey and he stayed there for several years. He was also helping his father with Vance Tree Construction and became Superintendent with the plan to take over the family business. While still taking the time to cut hair out of his home, Roy continued on the family business until retiring in 1997. At this point, he accepted a position as Side Judge for Caledonia County and held that for 24 years, stepping down in 2019. He served as Vermont State Representative elected for four, two-year terms and was President of the National Judges Association for many years. Throughout all this time working and serving in the community, Roy found time to raise a family, coach Little League, Babe Ruth and Basketball in Danville for many, many years and was even referee for Danville Basketball. He loved going to all the Danville sports activities, especially when his grandkids were growing up and participating. He enjoyed taking rides in the side-by-side with Linda, golfing when time allowed and coon hunting, back in the day. Draft horses were dear to his heart, purchasing them from the Amish in Holmes County, OH. He developed a lasting friendship with several of the farmers there, having taken a number of trips to the area. He was a lifetime member of the Freemasons, belonging to the Washburn Lodge #92 in Danville, the Shriners and the Knights of Pythias and the Scottish Rite having joined the Mt. Sinai Shriners No. 3 and became Potentate in 1994. Roy was longtime member and past President of the St. Johnsbury Rotary where he was later presented with the Paul Harris Recognition Award.
