Sheila Mae Bugbee, 89, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on July 3, 2025, after living a life full of joy, resilience, and saying “yes” to just about anything that sounded fun.
Born on October 3, 1935, Sheila graduated from Lyndon Institute, where she was a proud member of the cheerleading squad. That spirited energy carried throughout her life, from raising a family to cultivating a vibrant garden, to sharing summers with loved ones at Newark Pond—her favorite place on Earth.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend who found deep joy in her family and the simple pleasures of daily life. She loved digging in the dirt, cheering on the Sox, catching a good movie, and gathering with the people she loved most—especially if it involved laughter and pie.
She is survived by her cherished daughter, Karen Bugbee of St. Johnsbury, VT, and her life partner, Michael Dow; her grandchildren Kaytlyn Hope (Reverend Christopher Hope) and their son Asher of Cambridge, MA; Daniel Darling (Tricia Fortier) and children Harper Darling, Mathew Darling, and Bella Wright of Burke, VT; and Bridget Bouchard (Jamie) and their children Jake and Bailey of Berwick, ME. She also leaves behind her cherished nieces and nephew—Mary Ann, Carrie, Jennifer, and Dan—whom she loved like her own; her sister-in-law Beverly Lane; and many dear extended family and friends.
Sheila was also deeply loved by her Canterbury Inn family. The owners and staff cared for her with such kindness and dignity during her final years—making that chapter of her life peaceful, joyful, and filled with the warmth of true community. Her family will always be grateful for the extraordinary care she received there.
Sheila was predeceased by her husband Alton Bugbee; her parents Vera and Elmer Carr; her siblings Bud Carr, Arlene Bingham, and Patricia Kerl; and her beloved children, Brenda Bugbee, Lynn Bugbee, and Bonnie Darling. We like to think they welcomed her with open arms.
A graveside service to celebrate Sheila’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 22nd, at 1 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery in Burke Hollow, VT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the West Burke United Methodist Church, 114 Church St., West Burke, VT 05871.
