Sherburn Edward (Sherb / Sam) Lang, 79, of Lyndonville, VT, passed away at the Mountain View Nursing Home in Rutland on Saturday, January 13, 2023.

Sherb was born on October 23, 1944 and raised in Lyndonville by the late Edward and Iris (Shaw) Lang. After graduating from Lyndon Institute in 1962, he joined the US Navy. While stationed in Argentia, Newfoundland, he met his future wife, Helen Tisdale, whom he married on January 30, 1965. After leaving the Navy in 1966, Sherb and Helen returned to Lyndonville and started their family, remaining there until the summer of 1973, whereupon he took a job in Newfoundland in the Oil Industry. This occupation allowed Sherb to show his family the world, visiting over 30 countries and living in Canada, Spain and Malaysia before returning to Lyndonville in 1981 and building their home on Finney Hill.

Sherb became a Master Electrician while working on various oil drilling rigs, and upon returning to Lyndonville he started - and took great pride in being the owner of - Lang Electrical and Refrigeration.  Following its closing he returned to the oil industry, working in Africa, Saudi Arabia, and South America, before taking the position as the Head of Maintenance at the Quechee Club, from which he retired in 2010.

Sherb took great pride in both his Lyndon community and the State of Vermont. He helped establish - and spent time serving as the president of - the Hunters, Anglers & Trappers Association, where he lobbied at the state level to protect the interests of Vermont hunting traditions.  He was also a long standing member of the Lyndon Town School Board, including during the consolidation of the area schools into its current building on Lily Pond Road. In his younger years he volunteered in the Lyndonville Fire Department, and played tuba at the weekly band concerts for the Lyndon Town Band (Lyndonville Military Band). He also spent time on the Board of Directors for both the Lyndon Outing Club and the Fenton W. Chester Arena. Sherb was a proud member of the Masonic Temple and the United Methodist Church of Lyndonville.

In their younger years, Sherb and Helen enjoyed their time together riding their 1974 Norton Motorcycle, which they purchased while living in Spain. Sherb loved hunting and fishing, and made many special memories with family and friends at his camp in Maidstone, VT, which he built with his lifelong friend Mike Goodwin. He also spent many evenings with Helen fishing - a pastime they cherished together. Most mornings he could be found either at the Diner or Nicks Gas having coffee with the guys.  We will always cherish his stories and his sense of humor.

Sherb leaves behind his sons Christopher Lang and wife Marilyn of Gulfport, FL, Gregory Lang and wife Dorie of North Chittenden, VT, Sherburn Lang II and wife Susan of Essex, VT; his brother Lyndon “Lynn” Lang and wife Susan of Essex, VT; his grandchildren Michael, Cassandra, Hannah, and Connor Lang; Sean Montgomery, Ashley (Montgomery) Allen, Jordan and Caleb Brown, Riley McMullan, Jacob and Victoria Walker; five great-grandchildren; and his nephew Jason and his family.

In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, Helen, he was predeceased by his sister, Ina Mae Dewitt, and his twin brother Wardell Alfred (at birth).

Calling hours for both Sherb and Helen will be held this Spring from 5pm - 7pm at Guibord-Pearsons Funeral Home in Lyndonville on May 30th, followed by a graveside service for family at Lyndon Center Cemetery the following day.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
