Shirley Day Urie passed away on July 6, 2026 at The Pines with her son, Scott, by her side.
Shirley was born on August 3, 1937 to Lyle K. and Pearl S. Day. She grew up on a farm on Sheffield Heights along with her brother Edward Day (deceased), and her younger sister Judy Hammer (Seattle, WA). She attended all 8 grades in the Sheffield Heights graded school in a one-room schoolhouse with Mrs. Wilbur as her teacher. During the winter she walked to school with her brother, and in the summer they rode their bikes.
She fondly remembers Trixie, Prince and Peggy, the farm horses, and also the town rolling the roads with horses in the winter. She had an interest in horses, especially Morgans, and owned a few throughout her life.
As a child, she attended summer church camps in Thetford, VT and Lake Carmi. She learned to play guitar and loved polka music.
Shirley attended two years at Lyndon State College. She enjoyed living there and participating in activities. She was a model for art classes and played soccer and softball. She made many friends whom she cherished all her life. She returned to college later in life and received an Associate’s degree in Psychology in 1976.
In October of 1957 Shirley married Alan W. Urie. They bought and ran the Uries’ Pavilion, a dance hall in Glover, and created many memories there. They also had a registered Holstein farm in Lyndon, Urie-Lyn Farm, and farmed there until Alan’s death in 1979. Alan and Shirley also enjoyed many Saturday nights dancing at the Grange Hall in Lyndon Corner with dear friends who remained friends throughout the years.
Shirley volunteered at NVRH and Hospice in the ‘80s and ‘90s. She obtained her real estate license and worked for 9 years as a salesperson under various brokers.
In 1988 she had a post-and-beam house built on 10 acres of farm property. She was especially proud of this accomplishment since she acted as the general contractor for the project, which turned out to be her dream home.
She traveled across the country and saw many highlights of the USA. She also traveled to Scotland twice to visit her son and family.
Shirley leaves behind her sister Judy (Norman) Hammer; Edward’s wife, Phyllis; her daughter Kim (Scott) Sears of Williston, VT; her granddaughter Carly (Michael) Angelino; her son Scott (Kim) Urie of TX; and her two grandsons Simon Urie (Julie Glaze) and Garrett Urie (Hope Schweers). A highlight was meeting her great grandsons this past Christmas: Tyde, Reeve and Ryder. The entire family was with her in VT for our last holiday together. Mom cherished her family and friends.
Visiting hours will be at the Guibord-Pearsons Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Lyndonville on August 15, 2026 from 11-1 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. A service will immediately follow with Barbara Dwyer officiating.
Private family burial will be at the Dexter Cemetery in Sheffield following the service.
In lieu of flowers, you may donate to Caledonia Home Health Care & Hospice, 161 Sherman Drive, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819 or a charity of your choice.
A big thank you to The Pines for all the loving care you provided for mom and also to the friends who have visited her these last few years. You have all been very kind and thoughtful, and you are very much appreciated.
