Steve Montgomery

Steve Montgomery, 73, of Vermont, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 11.

Born in Rumford, Maine, Steve eventually made his way to Massachusetts, where he raised a family and built a life. He later settled in Vermont and spent many years working for the Department of Transportation, forming lasting friendships along the way. His closest bond was with his best friend, Dick Bourbeau, hunting together regularly.

For Steve, hunting and fishing weren’t hobbies - they were part of who he was, a man with a strong sense of his Scottish heritage.

To many at the DOT, he was known as “Pop Tart,” a nickname earned by his breakfast of choice. Sundays were for football, rarely missing a Patriots game. Most recently, he developed an interest in IndyCar racing.

Steve is survived by his partner, Christine; his two sons; a stepdaughter; and many cousins, friends, and neighbors who loved him and will miss him deeply. He’ll be remembered for his steady presence, dry humor, and deep loyalty — to people, to places, and to the things he believed in.
