Teri Thompson

Teri Thompson, known to many as Ms. Thompson, passed away suddenly at her home in Sheffield on the morning of Saturday, March 28. Born on November 26, 1952, she was the eldest child of Lloyd W. and Norma (McDowell) Thompson. She grew up in Sheffield, attended Sheffield Graded School (1966), graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1970, and earned her bachelor’s degree in education in 1974. She went on to dedicate 32 years to teaching at the West Burke School. Even in retirement, she continued nurturing young minds by volunteering at the Millers Run School, a role she cherished deeply.

Teri’s greatest passions were reading and children—especially the children in her own family. Summers often found her helping family and friends’ children strengthen their reading and writing skills. Her nieces and nephews fondly remember summer trips to the state library, where she guided them with patience and enthusiasm. With one eye on a book and two on the family around her, she always seemed to know exactly what was happening and could halt any budding disagreement with nothing more than a raised eyebrow.

A devoted lover of books and animals, Teri always had a cat by her side—the most memorable being “Itsa,” named after a favorite children’s story. She also had a lifelong affection for her Pomeranians, who brought her great joy.

She is survived by her siblings: Joyce Tedford (Chuck) of Idaho; Bruce Thompson (Missy) of Sheffield; and Lisa Thompson (Doug Whitcomb) of Lyndonville. She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews: Christopher McElroy (Ashley) of Concord; Jason Korpi (Megan) of Sheffield; Heather McElroy (Duane) of Island Pond; Melissa McElroy (Allan) of Barton; Samantha Thompson (Brian) of Concord; Kori Thompson of West Virginia; and Mickaela Wright (Justin) of Sheffield; along with many great nieces, great nephews, and grandchildren of the next generation. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Gary.

A small private gathering for family will be held, and a public interment will take place on Friday, May 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the Dexter Cemetery in Sheffield.
