Virginia (Ginny) Brown Hyatt

Nov. 8, 1928 - March 11, 2026

Our mother always said, "I'm going to live a nice long life" and true to her word, she peacefully passed away in her sleep at Canterbury Inn on March 11 at the age of 97.

She was born on November 8, 1928, in Patten, Maine to John and Idella Chamberlain.

There were two loves in Mom's life: her family and New England. She would say, "I don't want to live any further south than I live right now," and she kept her word, living her entire life in northern New England. She especially loved the changing seasons. To her there was nothing more beautiful than a fresh snowfall, fall foliage, or the smell of freshly cut green grass in the spring. Although dementia took away her recent memories, the wall of family photos in her room brought her comfort and joy, allowing her to revisit the moments and people she loved most.

Mom - affectionately known as Ginny by friends and family- was a long-time resident of St. Johnsbury and Littleton NH. She retired from the Hoveys Shops in St. Johnsbury and was a proud multi-gallon Red Cross Blood donor. While living in Littleton, she was very active in the First Congregational Church Ladies Society. She enjoyed working at the annual rummage sales, helping with the lounge and kitchen renovations, and volunteered for many years at Littleton Regional Hospital.

Ginny I.oved her home and was frequently involved in redecorating projects. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, writing poetry, watching the Boston Red Sox, and was a master at crossword puzzles. She liked to cook and bake - especially her apple pies, which truly deserved a blue ribbon. Trips back to her home state of Maine, along with Sunday afternoon drives through Vermont and New Hampshire with her husband Bill, were especially meaningful to her.

She was predeceased by her parents, eight siblings, her husbands Patrick H. Brown (father of her children), Roland Warren, William (Bill) Hyatt, son Patrick H. Brown Jr, and granddaughter Leigh Toombs Mann.

Survivors include her children: Brenda (Frank) Paulin of St. Johnsbury; Ellie (Bob) Toombs of New Bern, NC; Michael Brown of Brooksville, FL; Richard Brown of St Johnsbury; Christopher (Cheri) Brown of Williston, VT; and daughter-in-law Linda Brown. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Canterbury Inn for the years of compassionate and dignified care she received. She loved to sing and would often entertain those around her with her favorite songs. She was happy there.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 5th at 2 PM at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in St. Johnsbury, VT.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the activity program at Canterbury Inn, 46 Cherry St, St. Johnsbury VT 05819
