Wayne Mathewson

Wayne Mathewson, 68, lifelong Vermont resident, died unexpectedly at his St. Johnsbury home on January 14, 2026 after a period of declining health. Though his time here with us has ended unexpectedly, he was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.

He was born in St. Johnsbury, VT on September 15, 1957, one of nine children born to Hugh and Sandra (Proof) Mathewson. He was predeceased by his parents, 2 brothers Hugh & baby Teddy, and Nephew Mathew.

Family was the center of Wayne’s life, he is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Linda. His children; Joshua (wife Celeste), Curtis (wife April), Marcus (wife Libre), Christina (husband Josh). Grandchildren; Cameron, Issac, Nicolas, Trisan, Raye, Nathaniel, Kaberial, Gwyneth, Khierstyn, Karliyah, and Harmony. Brothers; Clinton (wife April), Gordon (wife Pam). Sisters; Lucy (husband Brian), Stephanie (husband David), Carrie, & Burnadette (partner Nate). Many cousins, nieces and nephews, too many to name all.

Wayne lived in Vermont most of his life, working on his family farm growing up, then in the logging business for many years. Followed by the manufacturing business in his later years at several factories as a machinist. He took pride in hard work and providing for his family.

Wayne found true joy spending time with his loved ones, whether at his family gatherings at Crystal Lake, Holidays gathered around the table, cherished weekly dinners with sister, Burnedette and nephew, Jacob or just sitting & visiting. His children & grandchildren were the lights in his life. Wayne also loved dogs & cats and they loved him, most days he would have at least one of his loving kitties sitting with him when he watched his beloved football games. He was a devoted & lifelong Washington Red Skins fan, rarely missing a game. A 50 year Lyndon Institute Alumni, he also supported his school team at the LI / St. Johnsbury games when he could. Wayne was an avid history buff, often watching documentaries, historical, & western movies. He loved old cars and snow machines, often talking for hours about them. Music was a constant companion throughout his life. He especially loved old-style music and classic country songs, which reflected his appreciation for traditional & simple pleasures of life. He often enjoyed listening to his extensive music collection which included multiple genres.

Though his passing was sudden, his impact and the memories he leaves behind will live on through us all. We would love any and all photographs, memories, and mementos shared at the upcoming celebration of life and/or shared with us. A gathering of friends and family will be held in celebration of his life at The Wheelock Town Hall, Route 122, Wheelock, VT 05866 on Saturday, January 24th from Noon - 4pm.
